Thesis on power quality problems

Download PDF Abstract Power quality is a set of electrical boundaries that allows a piece of equipment to function in its intended manner without significant loss of performance or life expectancy. All electrical devices are prone to failure when exposed to one or more power quality problems. The electrical device might be an electric motor, a transformer, a generator, a computer, a printer, communication equipment, or a household appliance. All of these devices and others react adversely to power quality issues depending on the severity of problems.

The widespread use of electronic equipment, such as information technology equipment, power electronics such as adjustable speed drives ASDprogrammable logic controllers PLCenergy-efficient lighting, led to a complete change of electric loads nature.

Power Quality Characterization

Power quality problems and new solutions photo by: Fernando Hidalgo Molina via Flickr These loads are simultaneously the major causers and the major victims of power quality problems. Due to their non-linearity, all these loads cause disturbances in the voltage waveform.

Along with technology advance, the organization of the worldwide economy has evolved towards globalisation and the profit margins of many activities tend to decrease. The increased sensitivity of the vast majority of processes industrial, services and even residential to PQ problems turns the availability of electric power with quality a crucial factor for competitiveness in every activity sector.

The most critical areas are the continuous process industry and the information technology services.

When a disturbance occurs, huge financial losses may happen, with the consequent loss of productivity and competitiveness. Although many efforts have been taken by utilities, some consumers require a level of PQ higher than the level provided by modern electric networks.

This implies that some measures must be taken in order to achieve higher levels of Power Quality. Power Quality Characterization Even the most advanced transmission and distribution systems are not able to provide electrical energy with the desired level of reliability for the proper functioning of the loads in modern society.

Feasibilities for power quality problem mitigation in microgrid. Riku Pasonen. Espoo VTT Technology 37 s. Tiivistelmä thesis ”Community Microgrid – A Building Block of Finnish Microgrid”. [3] Energy centre microgrid concept. However, the quality of power supplied is affected by various internal and external factors of the power system. The presence of harmonics, voltage and frequency variations deteriorate the performance of the system. In this project the frequently occurring power quality problem- voltage variation is discussed. Voltage sag problems is one of the most serious problems that affecting process industry consumers. Due to the awareness developed from time to time, consumers and utilities have become concerned with the inconvenience caused by voltage sag. It is important to distinguish between interruptions and voltage sags. Both is a power quality problems but are different in terms of occurrence.

This value is highly dependant of redundancy level of the network, which is different according to the geographical location and the voltage level availability is higher at the HV network.

The most demanding processes in the modern digital economy need electrical energy with Typical distribution of PQ disturbances by its duration for a typical facility in 6 years in the US Between andEPRI carried out a study in the US to characterize the average duration of disturbances.

From the Power Quality market or industry perspective, it is any product or service that is supplied to users or utilities to measure, treat, remedy, educate engineers or prevent Power Quality issues, problems and related items [6,8,12,13,15,23,28].

CHAPTER 6 CONCLUSION CONCLUSION This thesis presents a possible solution for power quality issues in a Microgrid connected utility and fixed speed induction wind turbine. However, the quality of power supplied is affected by various internal and external factors of the power system. The presence of harmonics, voltage and frequency variations deteriorate the performance of the system.

In this project the frequently occurring power quality problem- voltage variation is discussed.

This paper reviewed the power quality problems, effect of power quality problem in different apparatuses and methods for its correction.

Some power quality enhancement devices. POWER QUALITY PROBLEM. The Power Quality (PQ) problem is the occurrence manifested in voltage, current or frequency deviations that results in damage, upset, failure or disoperation of end-use equipment. Almost all PQ issues are closely related with power electronics in every aspect of commercial, domestic and industrial applications.
